In 1810, Caspar David Friedrich - inspired by the ruins of the Eldena monastery - created the painting "Abbey in the Oak Forest". The ruins of the abbey church are located on a small elevation east of Greifswald. The west portal is now about 2 meters above sea level. In the 20th century the sea level rose by approx. 17 cm. A massive increase can be expected from the middle of this century.
