In 2011, Saudi Arabia sent its tanks to help neighbouring Bahrain, a similarly autocratic regime, to help crush a revolution. Shortly afterwards, the German government agreed to export its most modern Type 2 A7+ leopard tanks to Saudi Arabia. The Leopard Type 2 A7+ is specially adapted for urban warfare. The deal for the export of 800 tanks was halted in the spring of 2014 after wide protest. Germany is one of the world’s largest weapons exporters.
